WordPress Maintenance

Recently I upgraded my Worpress installation to the latest release from Fantastico within cPanel on my hosting service. Upgrade worked fine but there was an error when posting new posts because of one of my plugins Role-Scoper. Tried to upgrade the plugin but the FTP kept knocking me back. Solution was to use localhost as the domain not the ftp.<domain> and the Plugin was installed.

Now to see if it worked! 🙂

Yes it did <VBG>

Three Mobile Faster Than Home Broadband

Sad really, the download speed I can get from my Three mobile is faster than I get on my fixed line broadband. Ho Hum.

Gordon Brown Just Can’t Resist Spinning

I signed up for a petition the other day (as I do). I quite like this system it allows you to blow off straight at the Government. As part of the system you get an email back if Number 10 responds.

Here is the Petition information – http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/reciprocalcc/ and the response
http://www.number10.gov.uk/Page20902

All quite reasonable except that instead of just putting their hands up and saying “Oops badly drafted law” they have to add the spin on at the end that “blah blah spend blah blah”.

It is for this sort of attitude that I want rid of this arrogant government and that twerp Brown who just cannot see that they have had more than enough time to fix things and broardly people are now worse off compared to before ‘New labour’ got in.

Clean up Grub and default boot after Ubuntu Upgrade

A bug bear of mine is that when you update or upgrade Ubuntu, it leaves all sorts of junk in the Grub menu and screws the default setting.

The solution is easy, boot into Ubuntu, open the menu.lst (sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst), find “#howmany=all” and change it to “#howmany=1?. Then run “sudo update-grub” to update changes. Next time, only newest kernel lines will be shown. This works even if you have other OSes installed as it leaves them alone.

Acer Aspire Recovery

I have been trying to restore an Acer Aspire 5310. The laptop had not had its recovery CD built, would not boot with a registry error and the BIOS had a password that was unknown.

Don’t despair you can restore Vista. Now the bad news is that if there is no recovery media or recovery console setup you will need to restore the whole system.

Hirens Boot CD is your friend but take care as different tools do different things and not all good! Continue reading
